After meeting Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev, Trump expects a very big agreement with Russia that might involve all of Europe. Bitcoin fell anyway, oil rose. What was said, how markets traded it and which dates count for crypto investors in Europe.

US President Donald Trump expects a "very big" agreement with Russia that could reach well beyond Ukraine. After an unscheduled meeting with Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House on Thursday, 5 November, Trump told reporters that "it might involve all of Europe", without giving details, TRT World reported, citing agencies. Bitcoin did not react with a relief rally. Shortly afterwards it fell to 75,208 dollars, its lowest level since 16 September.
For crypto investors in Europe, a Trump Russia deal matters through three channels: energy prices, EU sanctions that hit crypto platforms directly, and the euro. Below is what was said, how markets traded it and which dates count now. The wider sell-off is tracked in our daily overview of why crypto is down today.
What did Trump say about a deal with Russia?
He announced a large agreement but kept its content to himself. Dmitriev, who runs Russia's sovereign wealth fund and serves as Putin's envoy for economic cooperation, was in Washington for talks with Ukrainian officials hosted by First Lady Melania Trump. Trump said he could not share what he discussed with Dmitriev and that he did not meet the Ukrainian delegation himself. He described the meeting and a local truce as possible stepping stones to a wider deal.
What is known about the Ukraine track so far:
- Local truce: Melania Trump announced a six-day ceasefire for the Ukrainian city of Oleshky last month and called for a new, longer-lasting ceasefire on Thursday.
- Abu Dhabi: Kyiv and Moscow are due to hold talks in Abu Dhabi next week. US envoy Jared Kushner said the US, NATO, Ukraine and European partners held talks beforehand.
- Defence: The NATO-Ukraine Council met for an extraordinary session in Brussels on Thursday. The Ukraine Defense Contact Group meets on 17 November under the lead of the UK and Germany.
- Sanctions: Washington has already eased pressure on Moscow this autumn, including a temporary relief for Russian diesel. Our background piece explains the EU transaction ban on 14 crypto platforms, which remains in force.
Regulated crypto exchanges comparedHow did Bitcoin react to the Trump Russia news?
Not the way markets usually trade a peace headline. In the 24 hours to 23:00 UTC on Thursday, Bitcoin lost 6.2 percent, Ether 8.5 percent and Nasdaq 100 futures 6.9 percent, while Brent crude rose 4.7 percent to 99.24 dollars a barrel. That is what hourly data from Binance and Yahoo Finance show. The euro barely moved against the dollar, gold gained 0.6 percent.

The selling began long before Trump spoke. Bitcoin and the Nasdaq dropped in lockstep from 14:00 UTC, when chip and AI stocks were sold off after the midterm elections; our analysis of the Nasdaq crash has the details. Rising oil points the other way from a peace deal, too: a credible end to the war would normally push energy prices down, not up.
Our reading: the market does not price a deal without terms. A headline with no ceasefire line, no sanctions step and no date gives traders nothing to model, while the AI sell-off and the Democrats' win of both chambers of Congress are concrete. Until terms are on the table, Bitcoin trades with the Nasdaq, not with the Kremlin.

Why the Russian diesel deal is the real test
The one part of the US-Russia track that was meant to move real goods is diesel, and it is stalling. Trump announced an agreement with Putin on 9 October to make more than 300,000 tonnes of Russian diesel available to US and global markets. This week two sanctioned tankers that had declared the United States as their destination changed course, after state and federal officials warned that handling the cargo could have legal consequences, the Associated Press reported. A confirmed US delivery has yet to happen.
That is the pattern investors should keep in mind. Announcements from Washington come fast, but sanctions law, ports, insurers and allies decide whether anything changes on the ground. For a "big deal" that is supposed to involve Europe, that applies even more, because the EU's sanctions are not Washington's to lift.
Find the right exchange for your tokensWhat a Russia deal could change for Bitcoin and crypto in Europe
Three outcomes are realistic, and each reaches crypto through a different channel:
| Outcome | Channel | What it would mean for crypto |
|---|---|---|
| Ceasefire with an energy part | Oil and gas prices fall, inflation eases | More room for rate cuts by the Fed and the ECB, a tailwind for Bitcoin and other risk assets |
| Talks drag on after Abu Dhabi | No change | The market keeps trading tech stocks, liquidity and the Fed, as it does now |
| US relief for Russia without the EU | Sanctions split between Washington and Brussels | EU bans on crypto platforms stay; compliance checks at EU exchanges stay just as strict |
The third point is the one EU readers tend to overlook. EU sanctions on Russia are adopted and renewed by the Council of the EU, and that requires all 27 member states. A deal between Washington and Moscow does not change them. If you use an exchange in the EU, nothing changes for you until Brussels acts.
Russia is meanwhile opening its own crypto market. The Moscow Exchange plans to list Bitcoin, Ether and USDT from 1 December, with retail purchases capped at 300,000 roubles a year, reports BTC-ECHO. How that opening came about is in our piece on Russia allowing Bitcoin, Ether and USDT for public trading.
Trump Russia deal: the dates that count now
- Next week: talks between Kyiv and Moscow in Abu Dhabi. A ceasefire line or an energy clause would be the first real terms.
- 17 November: Ukraine Defense Contact Group under the UK and Germany. A shift in arms support would signal how close a deal really is.
- 30 November: holders of Trump Media's convertible notes can demand up to 1 billion dollars in cash, and the company names bitcoin sales as one option. Details in our report on Trump Media moving 4,259 bitcoin.
- 1 December: planned start of crypto trading on the Moscow Exchange.
Political headlines like this one move prices for hours, terms move them for months. If you want to act in this market, start with the basics: use a provider from our comparison of regulated crypto exchanges and keep larger amounts on a device from our hardware wallet comparison.
