Zcash gives back its NU7 gains: ZEC drops 7.4 percent on liquidations and an ETF outflow

Zcash has fallen 7.4 percent in 24 hours to around $1,250, giving back the rally that followed the NU7 upgrade. Long liquidations, an outflow from the Grayscale ETF and profit-taking hit at the same time.

Zcash (ZEC) has given back the gains it made after the NU7 network upgrade within a single day. At 2:48 a.m. German time on Sunday, November 8, 2026, one ZEC cost $1,249.75 according to CoinGecko, or roughly €1,121. That is 7.4 percent less than 24 hours earlier. Over the same period Bitcoin slipped only 0.3 percent to $75,688. That made Zcash the weakest of the 25 largest cryptocurrencies excluding stablecoins.

There is no single trigger such as a hack or a delisting. Three documented factors came together: long liquidations of $4.13 million within 24 hours, an outflow of $11 million from the Grayscale Zcash ETF on November 5, and profit-taking after a gain of almost 95 percent over the year. The sections below put these figures in context, set out the price levels ZEC is now trading around, and explain what investors in Germany should bear in mind when buying, trading with leverage, storing coins and dealing with tax.

Zcash price at $1,250: down 7.4 percent in 24 hours

The daily range shows how quickly the decline came. According to CoinGecko, the 24-hour high was $1,360.50 and the low $1,237.47, a gap of just over nine percent. Market capitalisation fell to $21.28 billion, which keeps Zcash in tenth place among cryptocurrencies. Around $690 million worth of ZEC changed hands in 24 hours.

Over seven days the price is almost unchanged: CoinGecko shows a weekly gain of 0.4 percent. The moves of the past few days were therefore a back-and-forth. TokenPost puts the range of the past seven days at $1,122.37 to $1,382.38. At 6:25 p.m. German time on Saturday, the price there already stood at $1,260.05, down 7.3 percent.

24/7 Wall St. also ranked Zcash on Saturday as the weakest of the 50 largest cryptocurrencies. The report notes that Bitcoin posted its lowest close in 30 days on November 6 and had lost 6.3 percent over two weeks. A weak overall market usually hits coins that have run up sharply harder than the rest.

Long liquidations: $4.13 million in leveraged positions forcibly closed

A long position is a bet on rising prices. Anyone who opens one with leverage deposits only part of its value as collateral, known as margin. If the price falls far enough that the margin no longer covers the losses, the trading platform closes the position automatically. This forced sale is called a liquidation.

According to TokenPost, ZEC positions worth $4.73 million were liquidated in the 24 hours to 8:10 p.m. German time on Saturday. Of that, $4.13 million came from long positions and only $601,610 from short positions, which are bets on falling prices. Longs thus accounted for almost seven times as much as shorts.

The mechanism amplifies every move lower. Each forcibly closed long position is a sale at market price. That sale pushes the price down further, and the next block of positions reaches its liquidation threshold. Measured against daily turnover of around $690 million, $4.73 million looks small. The forced sales, however, do not arrive evenly through the day but in short bursts, precisely when the price drops through a threshold.

Liquidations work like a chain reaction: each forced sale pushes the price towards the next threshold.

Grayscale Zcash ETF: $11 million outflow on November 5

The second documented factor comes from the US. According to 24/7 Wall St., $11 million flowed out of the Grayscale Zcash ETF on November 5. The fund trades on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH. On November 6, $1.8 million came back in, offsetting only a small part of the outflow.

An ETF (exchange-traded fund) is a fund listed on a stock exchange. A spot ETF on Zcash holds actual ZEC to back the shares it issues. If investors sell more shares than are newly bought, the fund generally has to part with coins. According to 24/7 Wall St., the fund is the only US ETF on Zcash. For a coin with lower trading volume than Bitcoin or ether, such flows carry more weight.

Since the NU7 upgrade: what has changed from November 6

In our article of November 6, Zcash was still up against the market. At 3:51 p.m. on November 6, one ZEC cost $1,374.92 according to CoinGecko, 7.3 percent more than the day before, while Bitcoin lost 3.8 percent. The occasion was the NU7 upgrade, which went live overnight into November 6 at block 3,543,405.

Since then the price has shed around $125, or just over nine percent. Nothing about the upgrade itself has changed. According to TokenPost, NU7 cut the target time between two blocks from 75 to 25 seconds, routes 60 percent of transaction fees into a reserve for future block rewards, and reduces the computing effort a wallet needs to detect incoming private payments. The only new element is the market backdrop: the rally around the upgrade drew in leveraged buyers whose positions have now been unwound.

Profit-taking after almost 95 percent in a year: ZEC versus Bitcoin

The third factor is the run-up. According to 24/7 Wall St., Zcash is up 94.6 percent year on year, while Bitcoin is down 26.6 percent over the same period. Anyone who bought ZEC a year ago is sitting on a large paper gain. In a weak overall market, such investors sell part of their holdings to lock in profits.

The report cites two further signs of waning interest. Weekly views of the Zcash Wikipedia entry fell 24.5 percent, from 1,117 to 843. On top of that, trading volume is thin relative to market capitalisation, which lets larger sell orders feed through more strongly into the price.

The direction of Zcash has been erratic for weeks. In late October the price fell ahead of the upgrade deadline, on November 3 it slumped eleven percent after a dispute over funding from the Zcash Community Grants committee, and on November 6 it rose after activation. The current decline fits into this pattern of swings and does not break a long-term trend.

Support and resistance: ZEC levels between $1,030 and $1,440

Support is a price zone where buyers have stepped in before and halted a decline. Resistance is its counterpart on the upside. According to 24/7 Wall St., trader Ansem (@blknoiz06) sees support at $1,030 to $1,100 and resistance at $1,370 to $1,440. The lower zone held twice in October: ZEC fell as low as $1,072 on October 15 and $1,048 on October 18.

The moving averages, meaning the average closing prices over a fixed period, stand at $1,237 for 20 days, $1,316 for 50 days and $766 for 200 days, according to the same report. At just under $1,250, the current price sits slightly above the 20-day line and below the 50-day line.

  • Bull case according to 24/7 Wall St.: a close above the 50-day line at $1,316 would mark the decline as a one-day correction. That would require renewed inflows into the Grayscale fund and a stable Bitcoin.
  • Bear case according to 24/7 Wall St.: another outflow like the one on November 5, combined with a falling Bitcoin, could push ZEC below $1,100. A daily close below $1,030 would mean the October support no longer holds.

Buying Zcash in Germany: MiCA exchanges, storage and the EU account ban from July 2027

If you are weighing an entry after the decline, the safest way to buy in Germany is through a provider licensed under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Since the end of 2024, MiCA has set out across the EU which obligations crypto exchanges must meet on custody, segregation of client funds and disclosure. Not every licensed platform lists ZEC; our crypto exchange comparison shows fees, licensing and coin selection at a glance.

Zcash faces one particular rule: from July 10, 2027, Article 79 of EU Anti-Money Laundering Regulation 2024/1624 bars regulated providers from maintaining accounts that allow transactions to be anonymised. The ban is aimed at exchanges, not at you. Holding ZEC remains legal. It is possible, however, that platforms delist the coin before then. If you plan to hold ZEC for longer, you therefore need a plan for your own wallet.

On storage: Zcash has transparent addresses, whose movements are visible as with Bitcoin, and shielded addresses, where sender, recipient and amount are encrypted. Before a withdrawal, check which address type your exchange supports. A transfer to the wrong type of address can fail or be reversed.

Leveraged trading in ZEC futures: when a position gets liquidated

This weekend's liquidations show the risk of leveraged products. A perpetual future is a derivatives contract with no expiry date, whose price is kept close to the spot price through a regular balancing payment, the funding rate. With tenfold leverage, a price drop of just under ten percent is enough to wipe out the margin on a long position. Saturday's daily range of just over nine percent between high and low would already have pushed such a position to the brink of a forced close.

If you trade with leverage anyway, fix your liquidation price before you buy, not afterwards. A stop-loss, an automatic sell order at a level set in advance, limits the loss before the platform liquidates. Which platforms offer futures, with which fees and collateral, is set out in our overview of perp DEXs. Leveraged trading can lead to the total loss of your stake.

Holding period and tax-free limit: ZEC losses in the 2026 tax year in Germany

For private investors in Germany, Zcash is treated for tax purposes as a private disposal under Section 23 of the Income Tax Act. If you hold ZEC for more than a year, you sell tax-free. Within one year, gains are taxable once the total of all private disposal gains in the year reaches €1,000. This exemption threshold has applied since the 2024 tax year.

The decline has a tax angle. If you sell ZEC at a loss within the holding period, you can offset that loss against gains from other private disposals in the same year, for example gains on other coins. Gains from futures and other forward transactions, by contrast, count as capital income and are treated separately. A tax tool matches purchases and sales using the FIFO principle, under which the coins bought first are deemed to be sold first.

Zcash after the pullback: $1,030 to $1,316 as the range to watch

  1. Record price and levels: note the support at $1,030 to $1,100 and the 50-day line at $1,316. If you want to buy more, you can find an exchange that lists ZEC through our exchange comparison.
  2. Check leverage: if you have an open leveraged ZEC position, compare its liquidation price with the daily range of nine percent. Providers' fees and margin rules are listed in our perp DEX comparison.
  3. Document for tax: keep a record of the purchase date and price of every ZEC purchase so that the holding period and loss offsetting can be proven. Suitable programs are listed in our comparison of crypto tax tools.
