In under a day, the pre-sale for the newest smartphone running on Ethereum sold out. This launch saw all 50 units, equipped with a special operating system, fly off the shelves.
This phone is a version of the Google Pixel 7a. But, it’s not just any phone. It runs on ethOS. EthOS stands for Ethereum operating system. The name also has roots in Greek, meaning “character”.
One special thing about this phone is its built-in Ethereum light client. It allows the phone’s system to validate blocks on its own. So, the phone becomes a “light node” in the Ethereum network.
The Ethereum phone comes packed with tools. You can manage payments, send messages, and more. Plus, it’s user-friendly. For example, it links up with the Ethereum Name Services. This lets users make payments simply. The device also supports Ethereum Virtual Machines and Layer 2 networks.
Special NFT Purchase Method
This phone wasn’t just up for grabs. Only 50 were for sale. If you wanted one, you first needed an ethOS non-fungible token (NFT). You’d then “burn” or destroy this NFT to get your phone.
On OpenSea, some are selling the ethOS NFT for three Ethereum. That’s about $5,000. It’s a huge jump from the $499 Google Pixel 7a.
