Exodus

The Exodus wallet is free to download and needs no account. You pay for it mainly when you swap one cryptocurrency for another inside the app, through a spread with no stated percentage. The quarterly report shows how important that line is: in the second quarter of 2026, 18.74 of 26.23 million US dollars in revenue came from swaps, or 71.5 percent, including 3.76 million through business partners. A year earlier it was 23.42 million US dollars and 90.7 percent. Swap revenue therefore also fell in absolute terms, with swap volume down 21.4 percent, while acquired payment services added new revenue.

ActionCost at Exodus
Download and use the walletfree, no account
Send cryptonetwork fee only, which according to Exodus goes entirely to the network
Swap in the appany spread in the quoted rate, plus the network fee to send the coins to the swap provider
Buy through partnersthe partner's fee, shown in the app before you buy
Sell through MoonPayMoonPay's fee, shown before you sell
Staking via EverstakeExodus receives a fee from Everstake, and the coins stay under your control

How to check the spread: enter the amount in the app, note how much you would receive and compare it with the market price. The gap is your cost. On a 1,000 euro swap, a 0.5% spread costs about 5 euros and 2% about 20 euros, plus the network fee. If you regularly move larger amounts, an exchange with a published fee schedule from our exchange comparison is often cheaper, and you withdraw the coins to your own wallet afterwards.

Tax: in many countries a swap counts as selling one asset and buying another, so it can be a taxable event. A tool from our crypto tax software comparison reads your addresses and keeps the records.

For the part of your holdings you plan to keep for longer, a device from our hardware wallet comparison is worth it; our guide to hot and cold wallets explains the difference. More wallets are compared in our software wallet comparison.

Fees & Costs

Exodus
Exodus

Downloading and holding are free; sending costs only the network fee, and according to Exodus all of it goes to the network. Swaps may include a spread with no stated percentage, built into the quoted rate; the app shows how much you will receive before you swap. When buying or selling through partners, you see their fee before you confirm. As of October 2026.

MetaMask
MetaMask

The wallet itself is free; network fees go to the respective blockchain rather than the provider. The cost driver is the built-in services: swapping directly in the wallet carries a MetaMask fee of 0.875%, above the cost of the same swap through an exchange or aggregator. Frequent swappers should avoid that route. The virtual MetaMask Card is free, while the Metal card costs $199 a year and is only available in select regions. The optional Transaction Shield subscription costs $9.99 a month or $99 a year. As of November 2026.

Usability & User Experience

Exodus
Exodus

Exodus is one of the cleanest wallets in our comparison: portfolio and prices at a glance, set up in minutes without an account. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and as an app for iOS and Android. In the German App Store it is rated 4.6 out of 5 (3,671 ratings), on Google Play 4.5 (133,000 reviews, 5 million+ downloads), retrieved on 27 October 2026. As of October 2026.

MetaMask
MetaMask

Getting started is straightforward, though the volume of networks, settings and built-in services can overwhelm newcomers. Handling the recovery phrase safely remains central — without it, funds are permanently lost. As of August 2026.

Features & Offering

Exodus
Exodus

Exodus supports 50+ networks with unlimited tokens on the major web3 networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana. In the app you swap through third-party providers across thousands of pairs, buy by card, bank transfer, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay and sell through MoonPay. Staking is available for 7 cryptocurrencies via the provider Everstake, and the coins stay in your wallet. For extra security you can connect a Trezor (One, Model T, Safe 3, Safe 5) on desktop and a Ledger Nano X or Flex on mobile. The Exodus Web3 Wallet browser extension was discontinued on 1 October 2026, and the NFT gallery ends on 1 December 2026. As of October 2026.

MetaMask
MetaMask

Supported are Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks, Solana, Bitcoin and Tron, with addresses derived from a shared recovery phrase. Available as a browser extension and mobile app. As of August 2026.

Verdict

Both providers are practically level in our overall rating (4.0 to 4.1).

ExodusOur Opinion

Exodus is the wallet for anyone who values a clear interface and wants to manage several coins in one place. Desktop and mobile, 50+ networks, swaps, purchases and staking in one app plus Trezor and Ledger support: for getting started with self-custody it is one of the most convenient options. New in the mobile app is Exodus Pay: a balance in US dollar stablecoins on Solana that you can send by phone number and spend with the virtual Exodus Card, which is also available in Germany; Exodus requires identity verification for it.

You should understand the business model. Exodus is listed and discloses how it earns money: in the second quarter of 2026, 18.74 of 26.23 million US dollars in revenue came from swaps, or 71.5 percent, including 3.76 million through business partners. The price sits in the rate as a spread with no stated percentage. If you only hold and send, you pay almost nothing; if you swap often, check the numbers first.

For long-term holdings, pair it with a hardware wallet, which Exodus supports directly. And as with any software wallet, responsibility lies with you: your backup is the only way back to your funds, meaning the twelve words and, in the mobile app, optionally a passkey.

MetaMaskOur Opinion

MetaMask is the entry point to Web3 for many users and by some distance the most widely used software wallet. For a long time it was a pure Ethereum and EVM wallet; that has changed. Solana arrived in 2025, native Bitcoin support followed in December 2025, Tron in January 2026 and Stellar on 29 October 2026. Separate addresses for the different networks are derived from a single recovery phrase, so there is no second seed to manage. In September 2026, Consensys Software Inc. announced it would rebrand as MetaMask and focus entirely on the wallet, with Joe Lubin as Chairman and CEO; Linea and the institutional business move to a new company named Consensys.

The strength remains connectivity: practically every decentralised application in the EVM world supports MetaMask, and the wallet pairs with a hardware wallet so keys never leave the device. Phishing detection and transaction warnings are built in. The wallet has also grown into a finance app: depending on the country, it offers perpetuals via Hyperliquid, prediction markets, tokenised stocks and the MetaMask Card, which European users get as a free virtual Mastercard with 1% back in mUSD. Since June 2026, the Money Account has been placing mUSD balances in DeFi protocols such as Morpho through third-party vaults, quoting up to 6% variable yield until January 2027; convenient, but it carries the risks of those protocols.

The weak point is the cost of the built-in services. Swapping directly inside the wallet carries a MetaMask fee of 0.875%, well above what the same swap costs through an exchange or aggregator. The wallet itself is free; it is the convenience route that gets expensive. Users who want cover for their transactions can subscribe to Transaction Shield for $9.99 a month, which protects eligible transactions of up to $10,000 per month. As with any self-custody setup, there is no deposit protection and no counterparty to call if the recovery phrase is lost.
